Māori business

Our Māori business team assists iwi, hapū and other Māori organisations on commercial projects. We also support other entities to partner with iwi, hapū and/or Māori organisations.

What we do

We are passionate about supporting iwi and hapū to build capability and capacity across the development sector. Our te ao Māori approach is centred on long-term relationships – helping the current generation achieve their vision and goals, in order to provide inter-generational outcomes.

Our Māori business team works closely with our practice area experts to ensure our clients have access to expert legal advice across the lifecycle of their projects.

We can help with:

  • Governance – establishing commercial entities to hold assets including joint ventures. We design tailored governance documents both at an individual entity and collective level.
  • Post-Treaty settlement transactions – the purchase and management of commercial property, including deferred selection properties and former Crown forest licences.
  • Māori land law – navigating Te Ture Whenua Māori Act 1993 to give effect to our clients' development aspirations for Māori land.
  • Treaty of Waitangi – advising on obligations under te Tiriti o Waitangi / the Treaty of Waitangi and legislative interpretation of Treaty provisions.
  • Iwi consultation – supporting and advising on iwi consultation during the development of projects.
