Treaty of Waitangi Settlements

The Treaty settlement process has been a key feature of politics and race relations in New Zealand since 1992

Greenwood Roche has been a lead panel advisor to Te Tari Whakatau: The Office of Treaty Settlements and Takutai Moana since 2005. We have also advised The Treasury, Crown Law Office and Te Puni Kokiri on Treaty Settlement negotiations. Our Treaty team has assisted with strategy and drafting advice for some of the most complex Treaty negotiations in recent times.

Greenwood Roche has advised on the structuring and implementation of Treaty Settlements, including devising and documenting the trading trusts that hold assets of post-settlement entities and advising on corporate trustee arrangements for receipt of significant commercial assets on settlement.

Most recently, Greenwood Roche has been lead advisor and drafter of the two collective deeds and eight of the individual deeds in the Marutūāhu and Hauraki settlements. A number of these deeds have now been signed.
